Testing ยท Practical guide

How to test an automation before production.

A repeatable test checklist for happy paths, duplicates, bad inputs and provider failures.

Principle: document the expected outcome, the failure path and the proof of completion before connecting live systems.

Define observable success

Write down the exact target state. A successful HTTP response alone may not prove that a record, task or message exists.

Test the happy path

Use synthetic input and check every expected state change, including the owner, timestamps, source links and final verification.

Test failure paths

Remove a required field, replay the same event, simulate a timeout and reject an approval. Confirm each result is safe and visible.

Check retries and idempotency

Retry only transient errors, cap attempts and use a stable idempotency key to prevent repeated side effects.

Release deliberately

Import into a staging environment, record the workflow version and test again after changing node versions, credentials or conditions.

Use the toolkit

Turn this advice into a structured workflow, then test it with synthetic data before production.
